Mexico beat South Africa 2-0 in the opening match
The 2026 World Cup is under way. Hosts Mexico beat South Africa 2-0 at a sold-out Estadio Azteca on 11 June, with Julián Quiñones scoring the tournament's first goal in the 9th minute and Raúl Jiménez adding a second after half-time.
In Group A's other opener in Guadalajara, South Korea came from behind to beat Czechia 2-1. Ladislav Krejčí put Czechia ahead on 59 minutes before Hwang In-beom levelled and Oh Hyeon-gyu struck the winner on 80 minutes.
The two other co-hosts open their campaigns on 12 June. Canada face Bosnia and Herzegovina at BMO Field in Toronto — their first men's World Cup match on home soil — while the United States start their Group D campaign against Paraguay at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.
